Our Stories NYC kicks off summer of literacy activities in Scarborough!

Jul 21, 2022

On Saturday 23 July, Our Stories: Whitby, Scarborough and Filey will launch its ‘Our Summer of Stories’ unit at the Brunswick as part of the National Literacy Trust’s Connecting Stories project.

The unit will be open throughout the summer holidays until Sunday 4 September and will be open from 9am – 5pm.

People are invited to head down to the unit over the holidays for book swapping, fancy dress, story time sessions, craft activities and more! Later in the summer there will be a special ‘Wizarding Wednesday’ session, where attendees will be able to live out their Harry Potter fantasies by making wands, potions, and glow in the dark art with The Curious Theme Factory.

Further events and activities will be announced throughout the summer via the Our Stories NYC Facebook page. All activities and events are free.

There will be many opportunities for visitors to win exciting prizes throughout the summer. Not only can visitors win tickets for day trips around the North Yorkshire Coast by entering our fancy dress photo competition, with support from the North Yorkshire County Council those who take part in the Summer Reading Challenge can also claim a special Our Stories prize.

‘Our Summer of Stories’ will kick off with a launch event on Saturday 23 July with face painting, fancy dress, free books, storytelling and a fossils and craft session with the Scarborough Museums Trust!

The Connecting Stories project is supported by funding from Arts Council England and aims to address the literacy attainment gap across the National Literacy Trust’s Hub areas. The project aims to improve attitudes and behaviours towards reading for pleasure and continues to support the wellbeing of children and young people in communities across the UK.

Helen Williams, Hub Manager for Our Stories NYC, says:

“We are incredibly proud to be bringing the Our Summer of Stories unit to families in Scarborough.

“Research has shown us how important reading for pleasure is for the mental wellbeing of children and young people. Our Summer of Stories is our way of supporting children’s literary development over the summer in a fun and accessible way!”

Stephen Marriott, Centre Manager at the Brunswick, commented:

“Getting lost in a good book is one of life’s simple pleasures, no matter what age you are.

“We’re therefore delighted to continue our partnership with The National Literacy Trust by supporting this fantastic initiative and hope that it will help to encourage a deeper love of reading across the local community.”
